今日の英文校正メモ vol. 6

日頃Topnotchにご依頼いただく英文校正業務の中で、ネイティブエディターが実際に行った修正の例をご紹介していきます。なお、前後の文脈によっては以下に示すような変更を行わないほうが良い場合もありますので、あくまで参考情報としてご活用ください。

変更前：artificial respiration

変更後：mechanical ventilation

「人工呼吸管理を要する」という文脈で“artificial respiration”が使われていたので修正しました。

変更前：functional substitution of a gene

変更後：functional replacement of a gene

「遺伝子の機能的置換」。

変更前：Patients were given a single dose of…

変更後：Patients received a single dose of…

変更前の表現でも問題ないのですが、単語数を減らすために変更しました。

変更前：The higher the score, the higher the satisfaction

変更後：Higher scores indicated higher satisfaction

こちらも変更することで単語数が減らせました。

変更前：patients were able to walk alone

変更後：patients were able to walk independently

「患者はひとり歩きができた」の英語表現。実際には自立歩行の意であったため変更。

変更前：In order to maximize the benefit of the drug, it may be necessary to start early treatment.

変更後：Early treatment may be necessary to maximize the benefit of the drug.

語順の変更により、頭でっかちの文を読みやすくすることができ、単語数も減りました。
