変更前：The mechanism is in discussion.

変更後：The mechanism remains unclear.

変更前のフレーズは「依然議論されている」と言いたかったのだと思いますが、“be in discussion”の主語は、通常、議論をしている主体です。例えば“The company is in discussion with tax authorities.”などのように使います。どうしても同じようなニュアンスを出したいのであれば“The mechanism is controversial.”でも構いませんが、“unclear”で十分な場合が多いです。

変更前：The patients was received the investigational drug for a treatment period of 24 weeks.

変更後：The patient received the investigational drug for 24 weeks.

“receive”を受動態として使用する文は存在しますが、上記の例は典型的な誤りの例です。また“for a treatment of”や“for a duration of”といったフレーズはforの1語だけで済むことが多いです。

変更前：The protocol was approved by the ethics committee of ...

変更前：The protocol of this study was approved by the ethics committee of ...

日本では「試験実施計画書」と全くの同義で「プロトコール」と言う方もいらっしゃいますが、英語のprotocolにはもっと幅広い意味があります。論文中で何の前置きもなく“the protocol”とだけ書くと、読者は一瞬戸惑ってしまうかもしれません。

変更前：Table 1 shows the baseline characteristics separated by age, sex, ...

変更後：Table 1 shows the baseline characteristics stratified by age, sex, ...

「年齢別に表に示す」などと言うときの定番フレーズが“stratified by”です。

変更前：differences between males and females

変更後：differences between male and female patients

ヒトについて述べる文脈において、性そのものではなく「男性の人」「女性の人」に言及する際に“male(s)”のみまたは“female(s)”のみで表現するのは好ましくないとされることがあります。今回は上記のように変更しましたが、小児患者が含まれていないことが確かであれば、“differences between men and women”もオーケーです。
